Propagation is the term used to describe the way in which plants re-produce themselves. There are two main ways in which this is done.
CLONING & SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
re-produces plants genetically identical to the parent
(b) Sexual Reproduction
which produces seeds that are a genetic mix of both its parents.
Cloning is often used by growers because it produces numerous identical plants that have known characteristics
Aeroponics is the easiest and fasted method of clone and seed propagation. Newly rooted plants can then be transplanted into any type of growing medium.
Propagator provides unbeatable conditions for vigorous root development so clones are ready for transplanting faster than ever.
Propagators & Heated Propagators
Conventional style propagators. Essential for successful cloning and seed propagation
Although there are many different ways to clone plants, including grafting and tissue culture, taking cuttings is the most widely used due to its simplicity. Some varieties of plant suit different methods, but in general, most plants can be propagated by taking cuttings.
a) HEALTHY STOCK PLANT
A good healthy plant in its vegetative phase is essential. A poorly plant or one that is starting to flower will take much longer to root.
b) GROWING MEDIUM
Many mediums are good for rooting as long as they have good aeration and are not too cold. Rockwool is the preferred medium for most growers because of its simplicity and sterile nature.
HYDROPONIC PROPOGATION ACCESSORIES
1) FLUORESCENT LIGHTING
Until the cuttings have a root system to deal with a lot of light, the ideal lights are fluorescent type lights with a bluish-white light which produce little heat, preventing the cuttings from drying out. Nebula and Lightwing fluorescent lights are ideal for this, left on for 20-24 hours a day.
2) HEATMATS / HEATED PROPOGATION TRAYS
By heating the rooting medium this improves the rooting process speed. The trays also have transparent lids to keep the humidity high and stop the cuttings from drying out. It's recommended to remove the lid on the propagation tray every day or two to let excess moisture escape and replenish the air supply.
Rockwool starter Cubes
(3) HORMONE ROOTING SOLUTION
Hormone rooting solutions like Clonex encourage rooting and generally includes anti-fungal to stop wilting.
(4) STERILE BLADES
These are useful in preventing contamination from occurring.
(5) MISTER SYSTEMS
These are able to keep the humidity high, although care must be taken not to over do it. This is unnecessary if the cuttings are in a heated and covered propagation tray. There are various products available to prevent cuttings from drying out. It's normal for the cuttings to wilt a little for a day or two until the root system starts to grow and the plant can transpire naturally.
Root medium too cold.
Environment too dry (Normally caused by excess heat from the propogation lights)
Seeds can be placed directly into soil, also into rockwool cubes or many other growing mediums.
In soil, they should not be sown too close together to avoid spindly seedlings, a couple of inches apart is generally fine. The seeds should be planted about half an inch below the surface
